Search the Titantic records

April 15, 2007

This isn’t one of the best family tree sites, mainly as the search functionality is pants. However for a couple of weeks you can look at the Titantic’s manifest for free. Yes I know I’m a sad history geek, but there is something really fascinating about seeing the records. Andrews and Ismay are on there, but so are the hundreds of other regular joes who were going to the US and Canada for a new life. It’s a really interesting document. Click here to see it.

Hoste Arms

Look where my lovely, wonderful husband is taking me for our 5th Wedding anniversary in May - The Hoste Arms , Burnham Market. It’s a really pretty village in North Norfolk and a gastro pub - woo hoo!

A *very* funny piece of viral marketing, it brightened my day. Good luck with the book!

A little bit of heaven?

April 9, 2007

Ok so I’ve been scouting places to live when we leave the UK (hopefully it will happen one day!). And I think I’ve found a possibility…..Salt Spring Island off the coast of Vancouver. How gorgeous does this look?

Saltspring Island

So the schools look good - with a 4 day week oddly! There is a farmers market and apple fair (so far it’s the same as Ely - LOL!) but with a population of 10,000 and no traffic lights! Check the offical website here

The other good point is that there is a flight 3 times a day direct to Downtown Vancouver, as well as a ferry service. But I think we might be needing to do a visit to check it and some of the other Gulf Islands out :)

Top Gear in the US?

April 9, 2007

How would this work??? I’d love to see Clarkson, May and Hammond trying to be nice about American cars - LOL!!! However more US road trips for them would be hilarious :)

Disney-lite…

April 5, 2007

So we’re back from Disneyland Paris and I’ve finally gotten time to blog about it. Bug *loved* it which is the main thing but otherwise it was a huge disappointment.

It’s not a patch on the Orlando park, which is run wonderfully. Disneyland Paris suffered from the following:

1. Lack of Magic - where were the fireworks and the theatrical cast members? No where to be found

2. Rude Staff - they really couldn’t give a crap. We had the *worst* serving people at the resturants, just awful.

3. Cleanliness - the 2 minute rule just doesn’t seem to apply at the Paris park - there was an open packet of bacon (?!?) lying on the floor with people slipping on it near the dumbo ride and it was there a good 45 minutes before it was picked up - disgusting!

4 European teenagers……I *never* thought I’d say just how wonderful British teenagers are!!! There seemed to be gangs of 16-19 year olds European kids wandering the park unsupervised by their teachers (they were obviously on school trips). Fighting, pushing small kids over, queue steaming - generally pissing off every Brit in the park. In Florida they would have had their asses kicked out, but there wasn’t any Disney security in sight.

5. Food prices were horrendous nearly 100 Euros for an evening meal at a resturant, it would have been a third of that in Florida.

So despite Bug loving it (Buzzlightyear and Pirates being the *coolest* apparently!), I think we’re just going to save up and go to Florida next time. We’ve worked it out and it would have only been about £300 more to go there for 2 weeks.
